Fast-paced, violent, loud, in-your-face and brilliantly executed. That just about sums up PIC's opening title sequence for The Final Destination. The perfect introduction to the fourth installment of a successful horror movie series. We discussed the 'Making Of' in an email interview with art director Jarik van Sluijs and executive producer Pamela Green of the Hollywood "design boutique" PIC.

“All technology to do with the production of visual effects interests us,” says Pablo Barquín of  Physalia – a motion-graphics studio in Barcelona, Spain. Using Kyle McDonald's free and open DIY 3D scanner software, Physalia created an unpolished and bold but innovative piece of motion art for Mad MMX – an international design event in Madrid.

“Glass pieces and particles come slowly together to form the TEDxEdges title, the same way people and ideas come together at the TED talks,” says main title designer Filipe Carvalho about his opening titles for the 2009 Lisbon TED event.

Animated nipple tassels turn into feather fans to reveal the first credit in Deubal's fun title sequence for On Tour (French: Tournée). This road movie about a troupe of American Neo-Burlesque dancers touring France won both the film critics' FIPRESCI Award as well as the Best Director Award at Cannes last week. The title sequence with its sparkles, humoristic typography and blurred neon lights (shot with a Canon 5D Mark II) embodies the spirit of the New-Burlesque movement.

Lisbon-based creative studio Captive combines the “chic humor” of Saul Bass with the highly stylized artwork of the Japanse illustrator Kinpro and added a touch of Maurice Binder to create a memorable title sequence for none other than a touring exhibition of – are you still following? – customized Russian Matryoshka dolls. That's got to be a first.

Watch the Titles on Tour!

20 Aug 10

Watching title sequences on a website is great, but nothing beats the silver screen, right? So, after the positive feedback we got about our movie title show at MU earlier this year, we decided, it's time to do a tour and take this show on the road. We're kicking off on 19 Sept. at Rialto in Amsterdam. But there will be a pre-premiere at the infamous Lowlands Festival this Sunday. After the Dutch tour (13 theaters and the Playgrounds Festival), the program will be presented at selected international festivals and events, t.b.a. soon. Meanwhile, read more about it!

Part two of our interview with Kyle Cooper. Great insights from the acclaimed title designer and (art) director on the use of typography in three classic main titles that made a big impression on him: The Dead Zone, To Kill A Mockingbird and Walk On The Wild Side. Sorry to keep you all waiting for part 2. Has to do with another exciting spin-off project, but more on that later.

Good news: a new series of video interviews with title designers is on the way. We're shooting in L.A., London, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin. Expect the first interview of the new series online in about 4-6 weeks. Subscribe by email to stay informed.

French title designer Kook Ewo (Silent Hill), who designed the uncanny opening title sequence, attended the black carpet premiere in L.A. two nights ago. From his hotel room he emailed us his insightful “making of” story. Let us know what you think!

Shine designed the gleeful and stylish animated title sequence for the new Jennifer Lopez movie 'The Back-Up Plan.' Reminscent of 1960s and 1970s illustrations and so-called "limited" animation, the title sequence shows a woman strolling the streets, as "New York icons graphically morph into baby iconography." Check out our interview with Shine's CD Michael Riley and take a look at the original storyboards.
