In little over 10 weeks, Paul Donnellon and his team of animators at VooDooDog had to deliver a fabulous happy-go-lucky end credit sequence for Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, whilst working with a director more used to drama than animation. A story about the lasting appeal of stop-motion animation in the CG age, about having to make creative compromises, and about childhood inspirations.

London-based creative Kris Clarkin created this live-action opening title sequence for a proposed film adaptation of the book Kill Your Friends, which addresses the age-old unholy trinity of sex, drugs and champagne against the debaucherous backdrop of late 90s Britpop hedonism. Made on a spectacularly tiny budget of 350 British pounds sterling as part of his Master thesis, Clarkin demonstrates with immaculate delivery, that you don’t need money to make magic.

Fast-paced, violent, loud, in-your-face and brilliantly executed. That just about sums up PIC's opening title sequence for The Final Destination. The titles form the perfect introduction to this fourth installment of the successful horror movie series. We discussed the 'Making Of' in an email interview with art director Jarik van Sluijs and executive producer Pamela Green of the Hollywood "design boutique" PIC. Stay tuned for a video interview with PIC.

Part two of our interview with Kyle Cooper. Great insights from the acclaimed title designer and (art) director on the use of typography in three classic main titles that made a big impression on him: The Dead Zone, To Kill A Mockingbird and Walk On The Wild Side. Sorry to keep you all waiting for part 2. Has to do with another exciting spin-off project, but more on that later.

Good news: a new series of video interviews with title designers is on the way. We're shooting in L.A., London, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin. Expect the first interview of the new series online in about 4-6 weeks. Subscribe by email to stay informed.

Here's something windy while you wait (as we work on brand-new content)... When title sequence maestro Kyle Cooper was a kid, he used to pick words from the dictionary and make graphic drawings out of them, to illustrate their meaning. A fitting foundation for his work on Twister, the tornado-chasing blockbuster that swept cinema audiences worldwide off their feet (ba-dum-ch!).

Concept by Gaspar Noé, eclectic typography by Tom Kan, ear-melting industrial techno soundtrack, and magical electrophotographic images by experimental filmmaker Thorsten Fleisch: These are the ingredients of the high impact, high energy title sequence of Enter the Void. If you haven't seen these floating around on the web yet, you're in for a surprise.

“Glass pieces and particles come slowly together to form the TEDxEdges title, the same way people and ideas come together at the TED talks,” says main title designer Filipe Carvalho about his opening titles for the 2009 Lisbon TED event.
